Why visit Alpe d'Huez in summer?
World-famous for its ski area, Alpe d'Huez takes on a whole new look in summer. The altitude keeps temperatures pleasant while the valley swelters, sunshine is plentiful and the resort becomes a perfect base for hiking, road cycling, mountain biking and family activities.
The resort is also steeped in sporting history: the climb of the 21 hairpins from Le Bourg-d'Oisans is one of the most celebrated ascents in the Tour de France, and thousands of amateur cyclists come to conquer it every summer.

Practical tips for summer at altitude
- Check opening dates for lifts and shuttles: most run in July and August only.
- Set off early on hikes: late-afternoon thunderstorms are common in the mountains.
- Pack sun cream, sunglasses and a warm layer: at 2,000 m the sun is strong and the wind cools things down fast.
- On major cycling event days, the 21 hairpins road may be closed: plan your journeys ahead.
