Why choose Alpe d'Huez for a family holiday?

Alpe d'Huez holds the French “Famille Plus” label, a commitment to family-friendly welcome, activities, prices and services. The resort has nearly sixty partners signed up to the scheme.

The big plus is variety. A single day can combine the swimming pool, mini-golf, a walk, the summer toboggan and some downtime. Teenagers have plenty of sports to choose from, while younger children can enjoy games, the pool and supervised activities.

Don't try to do everything. In the mountains, one big activity and a short outing is often all you need for a great day with young children.

Altitude, sun and safety with children

At 1,850 metres, UV rays are stronger and dehydration can set in quickly. Get children drinking before they feel thirsty. A cap is no substitute for sunglasses and proper sun cream.

Temperatures can drop quickly after a storm or at sunset. Pack a warm layer in every bag, even on days forecast to be very hot.

Babies and altitudeAvoid quick ascents to the highest areas. If your baby becomes irritable, has ear pain, vomits, seems unusually tired or has difficulty breathing, go back down and seek medical advice.

Some walks around the resort and easy paths may be suitable, but high-altitude trails are rarely suitable for a standard pushchair. A baby carrier may be more practical.

The Family Fun Pass costs €22 per person for one day, for a family of at least four people meeting the age conditions.

It can be if you use the pools, ice rink, mini-golf or sports activities several times. Do the maths before you buy.

Do activities close during the Tour de France?

What sun protection should we bring?

At 1,850 metres, bring high-factor sun cream, sunglasses, a cap and covering clothes, and reapply regularly.

Are summer nights cool?

Yes. Even after a hot day, temperatures can drop quickly. Bring a warm layer for each child.

How can you prevent altitude sickness in a child?

Go up gradually, keep them hydrated, plan rest and go back down if symptoms appear. For a baby or a vulnerable child, seek medical advice.
